Alibaba open-sources Qwen3.8-27B, a compact multimodal model. On August 14, Alibaba released open weights for Qwen3.8-27B, a roughly 27.8-billion-parameter dense model that accepts text, images, and video and ships under the permissive Apache 2.0 license with a native context window of about 262,000 tokens. The company positions it as a locally runnable option that improves on its earlier Qwen3.7-Plus in programming and everyday office tasks, and the weights are available on Hugging Face and ModelScope. Google ships Gemini 3.7 Flash for coding and agents. Google DeepMind released Gemini 3.7 Flash on August 13, describing it as a lower-cost workhorse model aimed at coding, web development, and agentic workflows. Google set introductory pricing of $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens through the end of 2026, with list rates of $1.50 and $7.50 taking effect January 1, 2027. OpenAI tells European ChatGPT users ads are coming. On August 15, OpenAI notified ChatGPT Free and Go users in the European Economic Area and Switzerland that advertisements will begin appearing in the product later this month. Cerebras's inference-cloud business nearly quadruples. Cerebras Systems reported that its cloud and services revenue rose about 287% year over year to $127.7 million in the second quarter of 2026, accounting for roughly 61% of core revenue, up from 27% a year earlier. The company said its retail tranche was more than 8,000 times oversubscribed, reflecting strong domestic investor interest in embodied AI. Drawing on figures tied to Anthropic's IPO preparations, industry analyses indicate the company expects roughly $10.9 billion in second-quarter 2026 revenue and about $559 million in operating income — which would make it the first frontier AI lab to post a quarterly operating profit.
